Aging and proud of it!

I turned 31 today. Getting old doesn’t really bother me anymore. To me, age is just a number and getting old is just a state of mind (phew, that’s either pure maturity talking or I'm in total denial!) hehe..

But a thought just crossed my mind today..If I am to live up till 90 (that’s the life expectancy for women in developed countries nowadays right?), I have just passed the first 1/3 of my life and now entering the 2nd. I went through compulsory education, hit puberty, went on to higher education, graduated, joined the workforce (reluctantly), explored many countries and their cultures, got married and got divorced… All that in just 30 years! So, what will the next 30 years bring? Will it be filled with more adventures or will it hit a plateau phase?

I spent almost half a day at the veterinary hospital yesterday. One of my cats got hit by a car a couple of days ago (or according to my dad’s conspiracy theory – probably got brutally hit by someone!) and had to go through a number of surgeries to save his life. His right eye had to be removed and the attending vet was quite sure that the other is totally blind too although we asked not to remove it yet unless necessary. His face was badly injured so the surgery today was to put what’s left back together again, mainly his jaw.

It was truly heartbreaking to see him so broken and low but he’s a fighter, I know he will survive this ordeal. I’m not sure how he will cope without his eyesight though but one of my neighbours have agreed to take care of him until he recovers fully so I think their constant care and love will help him bounce back in no time. For the next few days, we will take turn to bring him to the vet for daily cleaning, jabs and drips… it’s coincidental that I happened to take a few days off this week… or maybe it’s meant to be. He needed me.

I met up with my usual school gang at Chili’s in KLCC last week and we had a blast talking non-stop for 4 hours! We hardly have the time to meet up that often nowadays so it was an opportunity fully utilised to catch up. We laughed so hard and probably too loud that at times, we got some disapproval stares from other customers in the restaurant. But it was Friday night and the restaurant played loud music anyway so I didn’t see why they had to give us that look. Oh well, maybe they were just jealous that they were not having as much fun as us :)

Sometimes I don’t understand why some people hate school/college reunion. It’s not a venue where you compare who earns most, who owns the most expensive cars or who has the most kids. It is not a competition stage.. not to me anyway. It is just a simple place where you celebrate your friendships and strengthen them, a platform where you can look back at your innocent younger years and laugh together with those who were actually there back then with you and a venue to share your happiness and sorrow with those who have known you from your puberty days. In the eyes of true friends, your life/career successes or failures and even the extra 5kg (or 10!) won’t and shouldn’t change the real you that they’ve known for so long.

Of course, being a ‘diversified’ group as we are, we can talk about almost everything from politics and economy to current celebrity gossips and yes, we DO GOSSIP!
